1997
Dave
had played (along with Flea) on one song
on an album for Perry Farrell's new band Porno
for Pyros, called "Hard Charger". It was also on the soundtrack to Howard
Stern's autobiographical movie Private Parts.
On 28 February, 1997, Dave and Flea joined Porno for Pyros once again for a show at The Roseland in New York to play this song on the Howard Stern Private Parts Premiere Party, as well as "Dogs Rule the Night", "I Would For You" and "Mountain Song". Later that year, Perry announced the Jane's Addiction Relapse.
However, only three of the original members took part. Eric Avery declined after Perry invited him for dinner to ask him to take join the Relapse Tour. For obvious and understandable reasons, Eric preferred working with his new band Polar Bear! Flea played bass instead of Eric on the tour, which had its first show on 23 October, 1997, in L.A.. They only played on show before, on 18 October, 1997 a free show for Kroq. The first official show was in New York on 30 October, 1997, at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
The successful tour was accompanied by a "Best Of" album called Kettle Whistle, which featured songs from live shows and demos. This album was Jane's Addiction's fivth release. The band raised immense international attention from TV and the press. MTV featured or guest-starred Jane's Addiction on many shows, such as Live at the 10 Spot (that featured excerpts from their Halloween show in New York), Matrock, Alternative Nation and JAM to name a few. They graced the covers of magazines, such as Alternative Press, Visions or Rock & Folk. Dave did ads for MTV and The Gap and modelled for Anna Sui (and many fashion spreads followed)!
During the tour, they filmed the yet to be released Three Days movie, which features exclusive live songs from the Relapse tour, as well as behind the scenes documentary footage. It also includes a "Spinal Tap"-esque fake documentary within a documentary.
Dave is one of the producers of this movie. This tour surely did a lot for Dave, from establishing his "eccentric" rock-star image by sporting skirts and fishnets during various concerts, or even his well-publicised own "relapse" with heroin and other substances.
